450V High Voltage Electrolytic Capacitor for Valve Tube Radio HT Power Supply Filter 10uF 15uF 22uF 33uF or 47uF Panasonic EE

This is one item of new, good quality 450V D.C. electrolytic capacitor available in various capacitance values. They are from the Panasonic 'EE' series.

The high pack quantity options are cheaper per item.

These are used in various places such as modern TV backlight power supplies, Xenon photographic flash lamps etc.

Application Example:

I've used a 15uF plus a 33uF variation of these as a replacement for the dried-up old Hunts 16 + 32uF 'two in a can' type used either side of the smoothing inductor in the H.T. power supply of a 1950s Murphy A146CM valve radio as seen in the before and after photographs. (C38 and C39 on the schematic) There was also a 15uF HT decoupler in the radio console section which got the same treatment (C37). This cured an excessively loud mains hum on the set. If you have a valve radio which is otherwise working but has excessive hum, this is almost certainly what you want. The ripple current specification exceeds the 120mA of the old can type by a large margin, and the 450 VDC rating gives plenty of headroom for 300V D.C. HT working voltage. Operating endurance is given as 8000 hours at 105 centigrade. They would generally be used in more demanding situations such as modern 100kHz switching power supplies etc. and are rated as such.

Buyers frequently question if these quite small caps can really do the job of the much bigger valve radio and amplifier caps that they are replacing. The answer is that electrolytic capacitor technology has moved on somewhat in the last fifty years, thanks to use in computer SMPSs and yes, they can. The Murphy 146 valve radio example shown in the pictures has been running daily hum-free for five years and I'm much happier having some decent modern caps in the HT PSU than some horrible old thing that might expire at any moment, spilling foul-smelling capacitor smoke into the room and setting the house on fire.
